Nursing is one of the noblest professions in the world. Nursing duties cover a wide range of functions and responsibilities that depends with the level of qualification and the working environment. At the initial level, nurses are required for the bedside care of patients, while at senior level they are required to manage special group of people like psychiatric, pediatric, intensive care patients etc which require specialized skills. They are also involved in dispensing medication, keeping records of the patients progress, setting up and operating medical equipment. They should have patient, courageous, have a service mentality and at the same time be ready to work for extra hours even night shifts. Nurses have many responsibilities, and several roles. Some of the challenging and rewarding roles assumed by nurses include care provider, teacher/counselor, patient advocate, consultant, and researcher.

Education:

Degrees

Bachelor of Science Nursing: A bachelor program offered at colleges and universities that prepares nurses to practice across all health care. Graduation is required for entry into a Master's program, on to more specialized nursing positions such as clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse educator, or nurse researcher. B.Sc.(N) is preferred and often required for military nursing, case management, public health nursing, overseas/development nursing, forensic nursing and school nursing.

Qualification:10+2

Duration: 3 years and 4 years

General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM)

Eligibility: 10+2 with Biology, Physics and Chemistry
Duration: 3 1/2 years
GNM programme is to prepare general nurses who function as members of the health team, to hold first-level positions in both the hospitals and other such places.

Auxiliary Nurse Midwife/ Health Worker (ANM)

Eligibility: 10th
Duration: 18 months
ANM course provide training as to how to take care of health related needs of the people living in rural areas especially children, mothers and old persons.

Advanced Degrees

Master’s Degree: (M.Sc.(N)) Master's degree programs prepare nurses for more independent roles such as Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse-Midwife, Nurse Anesthetist, or Nurse Psychotherapist. Master’s-prepared nurses serve as expert clinicians, in faculty roles, and as specialists in geriatrics, community health, administration, nursing management, and other areas.

Eligibility: B.Sc Nursing
Duration: 2 years

    Mining engineers : Involved in  locating, extracting and processing coal, metals and minerals so that those materials can be used by manufacturers and utility companies.

    Nuclear engineers : Determine the processes, instruments and systems necessary to tap into nuclear energy and radiation.

    Petroleum engineers : Figure out new sources of oil and natural gas.
